First-time exhibitor
This year, Nicolas Millet is exhibiting at the Loire Valley Wine Trade Fair for the first time. It’s an essential rite of passage for the young grower, who took over the family estate a year ago. He will present his two creations. Confession, a white Sancerre made from grapes grown in limestone soils, and aged on the lees.
Screw caps only
The village of Rochefort-sur-Loire, 20km from Angers, is home to Domaine des Baumard, maker of Logis de la Giraudière. Florent Baumard, a discreet epicurean by nature, cares for 40ha of vines on both banks of the River Loire. The man displays the exacting standards and technical insight passed on by his father.
Germans under the charm
At last! German consumers are starting to warm to the charms of Cabernet Franc. That’s the view of Thierry Boucard, owner of Domaine de la Chanteleuserie, which farms 22ha of AOC Bourgueil and AOC Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil vines.
Conquering the cold
Patrick Baudouin is extending his footprint in Scandinavia. After Sweden in 2010, Norway and Finland are succumbing to his Anjou reds and whites as well as his Quarts de Chaume and Coteaux du Layon sweet wines.
30th grower joins Patrimoine des Terroirs group
Patrimoine des Terroirs, a group of independent growers, has a new recruit: Domaine Charbonnier in Châteauvieux (Department of Loir-et-Cher), which farms 20.5ha of vines in the Touraine and Rosé de Loire AOCs. This new arrival is the 30th vigneron in the group, which has members from all France’s regions of production.
Brothers eye new horizons
François and Vincent Leclair of Domaine de la Rochette (Touraine AOP) are starting to develop their export sales. For this push, they have designed new labels: one for the North American market, the other for South Korea. The former design is contemporary; the latter, classic and restrained.
Multi-sustainable
Ackerman is investing in sustainability, through a three-pronged programme: environmental, business and social. The négociant’s wine production and bottling facility has an internal plant to pre-treat all its own wastewater before release.
Tractors burn diluted diesel
Domaine Vacheron, near Sancerre, recently fitted its five vineyard tractors with Pantone engines. This unusual design burns a fuel/water mix in the combustion chamber.
Doubly sustainable
Loire Propriétés, a group of three cooperatives that are members of the Union de Coopérative Angevine, is preparing for certification to Agri Confiance and Vignerons en Développement Durable, two standards being developed by Coop de France and the Institut Coopératif du Vin (ICV) respectively.
Ecolo
Romain Paire of Domaine des Pothiers has invested in a 500m2 ageing cellar with frugal energy consumption. Built last spring, it was officially opened during the 2011 harvest. The walls are made from an innovative material (poured concrete incorporating thermal insulation) and the structure is all timber.
Organic vine plants
Evelyne de Pontbriand, the owner of Domaine du Closel in Savennières, is introducing organic vines to a one-hectare plot on the estate. The 7,500 vines were supplied by Lilian Berillon, the only nurseryman in France to produce this type of product.
Brazil in focus
In 2007, while working for an international food company, Laura Semeria decided to make her dream come true – and become a wine grower. Hailing from an Italian family that has made olive oil for three generations, attended evening classes to become a sommelier…
A new ageing cellar at Domaine Chauveau
Back in 1998, Benoît Chauveau took over the 12ha family estate deep in the Pouilly-Fumé appellation. Today, with annual output of 80,000 bottles (35% exported), the vigneron and his wife have decided to build a new 200m2 ageing cellar.
